Parachute wants all Canadians to live long lives to the fullest – and that means being physically active to stay healthy, while preventing serious injury. These tips will help you remove hazards from winter sport and physical recreation activities by following safety standards and using the right equipment.
We need to move more to be healthy
- Only 39 per cent of 5- to 17-year-olds are reaching their recommended physical activity levels as outlined in the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Children and Youth.
- Only 16 per cent of Canadian adults are active enough to reap health benefits, according to the 2019 ParticipACTION Report Card on Physical Activity for Adults. That activity level is defined as 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity each week. That means eight out of 10 Canadians are not active enough.
- 87 per cent of those surveyed in the 2018 ParticipACTION Pulse Report agreed that they needed to become more physically active.
- Barriers to being more active included “the daily grind” of employment: commuting, busy schedules, screen use and excessive sitting (56 per cent of respondents) although 60 per cent of respondents believe they have enough time to be more physically active.
