Our fifth National Injury Prevention Day includes light-ups of landmarks in Parachute Green across Canada and a national social media campaign to raise awareness around the importance of injury prevention. We will also be releasing a new national report documenting the impact of injury in Canada – Potential Lost, Potential for Change: The Cost of Injury Report, 2021.
Nearly all Canadians agree that everyone must do their part to make the roads safe and 78 per cent agree that injuries from road crashes are preventable, according to a new Ipsos survey conducted for Parachute and our Vision Zero partner, Desjardins Insurance. However, fewer agree that there should be measures such as more traffic calming in their community and lower speed limits, suggesting there may be a gap between attitudes and action.
The webinar, presented May 31 as part of Safe Kids Week, featured our President and CEO Pamela Fuselli, UBC associate professor Dr. Mariana Brussoni, and a panel of experts who discussed the importance of unstructured, outdoor play for children’s physical and mental health.
Parachute in the news
Why injury prevention matters
At Parachute, Canada’s national charity dedicated to injury prevention, we know the majority of injuries are predictable, and preventable.
In Canada, unintentional injury is…
No.1 cause of death for people ages 1 to 34
Top 3 causes of death ages 35 to 64
One child dies every day on average from an injury
65% of injury-caused deaths in seniors stem from falls
In the past decade, we’ve seen fewer injury-related deaths in Canada thanks to better laws, products and education. How we can do more:
We envision a Canada free of serious injuries, with Canadians living long lives to the fullest.
We want people to play, explore and be active while avoiding hazards that can cause injury and death.
So go ahead and skydive – but wear your parachute, when you do.
